The Brain's Defense Team

Mirica® for Brain/Nervous System Support

A healthy inflammatory response is known to play a major role in our overall health. Prolonged inflammation has been linked to pain and various mental and physical health conditions. Inflammation is regulated by immune cells throughout the body. When these cells respond too vigorously for too long, inflammation occurs, resulting in damage. The delicate neurons of the brain/nervous system (which have the essential job of sending the electrical signals across the brain and throughout the body that keep the entire body working) are especially vulnerable to the effects of inflammation. As we age, immune cells can become dysregulated and begin to wreak havoc on the delicate neurons and surrounding tissues, this can lead to increased inflammation and damage, accelerating the ageing process even further. Thankfully there’s a system in place that minimises damage to these precious cells.

The Brain's Defense Team

The brain/nervous system has its own team of immune cells, and its star players are the astrocytes, microglia and mast cells.

These cells do a great job of keeping neurons safe from harm so they can function optimally. When neurons of the brain are functioning well, we can think clearly, recall information quickly, and our mood will be balanced. When the neurons throughout the body are healthy, we experience less pain and are able to move with ease.

Both key ingredients in Mirica® have been shown to support the nervous system and reduce inflammation by targeting inflammation at its source, immune cells.*

What is PEA?

Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is produced by various cells throughout the body.  It plays a key role in protecting and repairing tissues and minimising pain.* Since its discovery in 1957, PEA has been studied extensively for its anti-inflammatory, neuro-protective and analgesic properties.* PEA has been shown through numerous studies to modulate (regulate) the activation of mast cells, microglia, and astrocytes resulting in PEA’s neuro-protective and pain reducing properties.* (It’s important to note, PEA is not an immune suppressant, but an immune modulator.) Human clinical trials have shown PEA can improve mood and reduce everyday aches and pains.*

The Research

In a recent meta-analysis of PEA involving a total of 1484 chronic pain patients, those taking PEA reported pain levels an average of 2.7 points lower than the control groups after 60 days.* (Paladini 2016)

What is Luteolin?

Luteolin is found in many herbs and vegetables. It is a flavonoid and potent antioxidant. (Antioxidants reduce oxidative stress, which is held to be associated with ageing.) Luteolin has been shown through multiple animal studies to decrease pain and inflammation.*

The Synergistic Combination of PEA & Luteolin

When combined, PEA and luteolin show enhanced anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and neuroprotective properties. Coadministration of PEA with luteolin has been shown to decrease mast cell activation significantly more than PEA or luteolin alone. This combination has been shown to reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta, IL-6) and chemokines (MIP-1 alpha, MIP-2) significantly more than PEA or luteolin alone. Additionally, PEA with luteolin was shown to reduce oxidative and nitrosative damage more effectively than PEA or luteolin alone.*
